        Job-site sums

These sums only add up the sizes you type. They do not choose a wire size, a pipe size, a breaker or a mix — that is your call and your local code's.

        What a plumber's quotation lists

This page opens on the Plumber trade, with 15 common jobs and 15 common materials ready to tap.

Kind of lineReady-made linesUnit it starts with
Fitting, counted by the pieceTap replacement, tap or mixer, wash basin, kitchen sink, western toilet, flush tank repair, shower, water heater, water tank, motor or pumpnos

MaterialsCPVC and PVC pipe, elbows, tees and couplings, valves, taps, hoses, basin, toilet, flush tank, solvent cement, thread seal tape, tank, floor traplength, nos, roll

The pipe sizes in the list are names to bill by. Change them to what the job uses; the tool does not choose a pipe size for you.

Fitting charge, running foot, or the whole bathroom

Replacing a tap or fitting a basin is quoted by the piece: the number of fittings as the quantity, your charge for one as the rate. New pipe lines are usually quoted by the running foot or metre — the unit box takes rft, ft or m. A complete bathroom is often one figure: leave the quantity empty, type the price as the rate, and use the notes to list what that figure covers.

Customers often buy the sanitaryware themselves. Then the quotation has your fitting lines, and only the small materials you bring — pipe, fittings, solvent, tape.

        Lines that are often forgotten

        Adding up the pipe

Under Job-site sums, open Wire and pipe lengths. Type each run as you measure it and the spare you want on top. Type the length of one pipe as it is sold, and the sum tells you how many lengths to buy. Add it as a material puts that count on the quotation. For tiles that have to be re-laid after the pipe work, the Tiles sum counts them, with an allowance for cutting.

From the quotation to the bill

When the customer agrees, tap Accepted at the top so the job shows as agreed in Your jobs. When the work is finished, tap Make the bill for this job. The bill takes the next bill number and today's date, and keeps every line, so fittings and pipe can be changed to what was really used before you send it. Record each payment under Money received; the bill then prints what has been received and the balance due, and the Receipt paper states the amount in figures and in words. The full steps, the worked example of the sums and the ways to send the paper are in the main guide.

        Questions
How do I write a plumbing quotation for a bathroom?

Either add each fitting as its own line — basin, toilet, shower, taps, pipe line by the running foot — or add the line Bathroom plumbing, complete with the price as a lump sum, and list what it covers in the notes. Add the materials you supply as their own lines.

Can I bill materials at the real cost after the work?

Yes. Quote with your best estimate, and when you make the bill, change the quantity and rate of each material line to what was actually bought. The total, the amount in words and the balance follow by themselves.

Does the tool choose pipe sizes?

No. The list has pipe sizes as names you can bill for and change. It never works out which size a line needs.

How do I charge for a leak repair visit?

The line Leak repair starts with the unit visit. Put your visit charge as the rate. If parts are needed, add them as material lines once you know what they are.
