By the square foot, by the piece, or by the day

Wardrobes, kitchen cabinets and lofts are usually priced by the square foot of the front: width times height. Measure, multiply, and put the area as the quantity. Say in the notes how you measured, because a rate that includes the plywood, laminate and hardware is a very different rate from one for labour alone.

If the customer buys the materials, quote labour by the square foot or by the day and send them the Materials paper as the shopping list: it has every material line with its quantity and a box to tick, and no prices. If you supply everything, either fold the materials into your square-foot rate, or add them as lines and let the paper show labour and materials as two subtotals.

Doors, locks and repairs are quoted by the piece. For a repair nobody can size in advance, the day line with your day rate is the honest one.

        Lines that are often forgotten

        The advance

Woodwork means buying sheets before a single cut is made, so an advance is normal. Type it under Advance to start work, or tap 50% for half the total, and it prints under the total. When it is paid, add it under Money received — an advance can be recorded before there is a bill — and send the Receipt paper for it.

From the quotation to the bill

When the customer agrees, tap Accepted at the top so the job shows as agreed in Your jobs. When the work is finished, tap Make the bill for this job. The bill takes the next bill number and today's date, and keeps every line, so you can change the area to what was finally built before you send it. Record each payment under Money received; the bill then prints what has been received and the balance due, and the Receipt paper states the amount in figures and in words. The full steps, the worked example of the sums and the ways to send the paper are in the main guide.

        Questions
How do I quote a wardrobe by the square foot?

Tap Wardrobe making, type the area of the front (width times height) as the quantity and your rate for one square foot as the rate. Write in the notes whether the rate includes plywood, laminate and hardware or is for labour only.

Can I give the customer a list of materials to buy?

Yes. Add the plywood, laminate, hinges and other materials as material lines with their quantities. The Materials paper prints them as a shopping list with tick boxes and no prices, and you can send it as a PDF or a link.

How do I show the advance on the quotation?

Type it under Advance to start work, or tap 50% to fill in half the total. It prints under the total. When the customer pays it, add it under Money received and the Receipt paper is ready to send.

Can I charge by the day instead?

Yes. The line Carpenter day work starts with the unit day. Put the number of days as the quantity and your day rate as the rate.
