What the merged file contains
Each file is added whole, in the order of the list: every page of the first file, then every page of the second, and so on. The pages are copied as they are — not re-printed and not re-compressed — so text stays selectable and searchable, and pictures keep the quality they had. The download is named merged.pdf, and the line under the button tells you how many files went in and how many pages came out.
Getting the order right
Files join the list in the order you add them. ▲ and ▼ move a file one place up or down, and ✕ takes it out. Nothing is combined until you press the button, so you can rearrange as much as you like, and you can add more files at any point by dropping them on the box again.
The Merge tab orders whole files, not single pages. To move one page — a cover sheet that sits in the middle of a file, for instance — merge first, then open the result in the PDF editor and drag the page in its Pages panel. To leave pages out, extract the pages you want first and merge those.
Mixing in pictures
JPG, PNG and WebP pictures can go in the same list as PDFs. Each one becomes a single page in the shape of the picture, which is the quick way to attach a photographed receipt, ID card or signed page to a PDF application. There is more about pictures on the JPG to PDF page.
Things to know before you merge
- Password-protected PDFs. Remove the password first. A locked file cannot be combined properly.
- Bookmarks. The outline that some PDFs show in a side panel is not carried into the merged file.
- Fillable forms. Fill a form in before merging it. Its boxes may stop being fillable once it is part of another file.
- Size. The merged file is about as big as the files that went into it added together. If it is over an upload limit, compress it to a target size.
- How many files. There is no set limit. The work is done by your own device, so a very large batch is limited only by its memory.
How do I merge PDF files for free?
Open ManyHand PDF, add your PDFs on the Merge tab, put them in order with the arrows and click Merge & download. Free and in your browser.
Can I combine images and PDFs together?
Yes. Images you add become pages, so you can merge PDFs and JPG, PNG or WebP images into one file.
Are my files uploaded?
No — merging happens locally in your browser, so your files stay private.
Does merging reduce the quality?
No. Pages are copied unchanged, so text stays selectable and pictures stay as sharp as they were.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
There is no set limit and no daily quota. Very large batches are limited only by the memory of your device.
Can I reorder individual pages?
The Merge tab orders whole files. To move single pages, merge first and then drag the pages in the Pages panel of the ManyHand PDF editor.
