Tips for counting in Hindi and Malayalam
- Hindi 11 to 20 each have their own word — ग्यारह, बारह, तेरह… They echo the units (तेरह sounds like तीन), but children learn them one by one, like the English teens.
- Malayalam 11 to 18 are built from പതി- (ten) and the unit: പതിനാല് (14) is “ten-four”. പന്ത്രണ്ട് (12) and പത്തൊമ്പത് (19) are a little different.
- Hindi digits. The second column shows Devanagari digits (१ २ ३). Most Hindi books and signs today use the same 1, 2, 3 as English, so learn both.
- Count real things — spoons, steps, buttons — and say the number together after each one. ABC Fun! shows that many pictures for every number.
