| 0 °F | -17.77778 °C |
| 32 °F | 0 °C |
| 40 °F | 4.444444 °C |
| 50 °F | 10 °C |
| 60 °F | 15.55556 °C |
| 70 °F | 21.11111 °C |
| 80 °F | 26.66667 °C |
| 90 °F | 32.22222 °C |
| 98.6 °F | 37 °C |
| 100 °F | 37.77778 °C |
| 200 °F | 93.33333 °C |

| 350 °F | 176.6667 °C |
How Fahrenheit converts to Celsius
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The order matters — take off the 32 first.
In your head: subtract 30 and halve. For 80 °F that gives 25 °C against a true 26.7. It is good enough for the weather and not for a thermometer reading.
Weather
| °F | °C | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | −17.8 | Bitterly cold |
| 32 | 0 | Freezing |
| 50 | 10 | Cool, a jacket |
| 68 | 20 | Mild, room temperature |
| 86 | 30 | Hot |
| 104 | 40 | Dangerous heat |
Body temperature
The familiar 98.6 °F is exactly 37 °C. A reading of 100.4 °F is 38 °C, where a fever is generally said to begin, and 103 °F is 39.4 °C. When reading an American thermometer or medical leaflet, use the exact formula and not the shortcut.
American oven settings
| °F | Exact °C | Use on the dial |
|---|---|---|
| 325 | 163 | 160 |
| 350 | 177 | 180 |
| 375 | 191 | 190 |
| 400 | 204 | 200 |
| 425 | 218 | 220 |
| 450 | 232 | 230 |
In a fan oven, reduce the Celsius setting by about 20 degrees, since moving air cooks faster.
Where Fahrenheit is used
The United States uses Fahrenheit for weather, cooking and body temperature, as do a few other countries and territories. Almost everywhere else, and all of science, uses Celsius. Daniel Fahrenheit set his scale in the early 1700s with zero at the coldest mixture he could make in his laboratory; Celsius, a few decades later, was built on the freezing and boiling points of water, which is why its numbers are rounder.
Below zero
The formula works for negative values too, as long as you keep the sign: −4 °F is (−4 − 32) × 5/9 = −20 °C. The two scales read the same at −40.
