A neater trick uses the Fibonacci numbers 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89. Each number in kilometres is roughly the one before it in miles: 8 km is about 5 miles, 13 km about 8, 21 km about 13. It works because the ratio between neighbouring Fibonacci numbers, 1.618, is very close to 1.609.
