| Celsius | Fahrenheit |
|---|---|
| 0 °C | 32 °F |
| 10 °C | 50 °F |
| 20 °C | 68 °F |
| 25 °C | 77 °F |
| 30 °C | 86 °F |
| 32 °C | 89.6 °F |
| 37 °C | 98.6 °F |
| 40 °C | 104 °F |
| 50 °C | 122 °F |
| 75 °C | 167 °F |
| 100 °C | 212 °F |
| 180 °C | 356 °F |
| 200 °C | 392 °F |
How Celsius converts to Fahrenheit
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32. The 1.8 is there because a Fahrenheit degree is smaller — there are 180 of them between freezing and boiling where Celsius has 100 — and the 32 is there because the two scales start from different zeros.
In your head: double it and add 30. For 20 °C that gives 70 °F against a true 68. The shortcut is within a few degrees for ordinary weather and drifts further out at the extremes.
Reference points
| What | °C | °F |
|---|---|---|
| The two scales meet | −40 | −40 |
| Water freezes | 0 | 32 |
| A cool day | 10 | 50 |
| Room temperature | 20 to 22 | 68 to 72 |
| A hot day | 30 | 86 |
| Normal body temperature | 37 | 98.6 |
| Heatwave | 40 | 104 |
| Water boils at sea level | 100 | 212 |
Fever
A temperature of 38 °C is 100.4 °F, the usual threshold for a fever. 39 °C is 102.2 °F and 40 °C is 104 °F. Here the shortcut is not good enough — use the exact formula, because half a degree matters.
Oven temperatures
Recipes round to the settings an oven dial actually has, so a converted figure is rounded too.
| °C | Exact °F | Use on the dial |
|---|---|---|
| 160 | 320 | 325 |
| 180 | 356 | 350 |
| 200 | 392 | 400 |
| 220 | 428 | 425 |
A change is not a reading
To convert a difference in temperature, leave out the 32. A rise of 5 °C is a rise of 9 °F, not 41. This catches people out with weather forecasts (“5 degrees warmer tomorrow”) and climate figures.
