Why aircraft and property still use feet
Aviation uses feet for altitude almost everywhere in the world, even in countries that are otherwise fully metric, so flight levels and mountain heights on aviation charts need converting. Property is the other holdout: plot dimensions, floor heights and room sizes in India, the United States and the United Kingdom are routinely given in feet.
Lengths are not areas
To convert an area, the factor is squared. One square foot is 0.0929 square metres, not 0.3048. A room of 12 ft by 10 ft is 3.66 m by 3.05 m, which is 11.15 m², and that equals 120 sq ft × 0.0929.
