A stone is 14 pounds, which is exactly 6.35029318 kg. So stone = kg ÷ 6.35029.
In your head: divide by 6 and take a little off. For 70 kg, 70 ÷ 6 is about 11.7, and the true value is 11.02 stone, so allow around 5% less.
Stone and pounds, not decimal stone
Nobody says “11.6 stone”. Body weight is given in stones and pounds, such as 11 st 8 lb, and the decimal has to be turned into pounds.
- Multiply the kilograms by 2.20462 to get pounds.
- Divide by 14. The whole number is the stones.
- What is left over is the pounds.
For 80 kg: 80 × 2.20462 = 176.4 lb. Twelve stones are 168 lb, leaving 8.4 lb, so 80 kg is 12 st 8 lb.

Reading 11.5 stone as “11 stone 5” is wrong: half a stone is 7 lb, so 11.5 stone is 11 st 7 lb. The gap between the two is about a kilogram, enough to matter when tracking weight or working out a dose. Health services record weight in kilograms for this reason.
